You Have Been Waiting Years To Do This
If you own a dachshund, a stranger has told you it looks like a hot dog roughly once a week for its entire life. There is exactly one correct response and this is it. The Wienna lies along the back like a saddle, two padded bun halves, a red sausage, a stripe of yellow mustard.
It fastens with two belly straps and nothing goes through a leg, which is why it goes on in seconds and stays on. Cut for long backs, so it sits properly on a sausage dog and only slightly absurdly on everyone else. Three sizes, chest 15.4 to 19.7 inches.

Why It’s Better

- Cut For A Long Back: The proportions suit a dachshund or a corgi, where a normal costume rides up and leaves half the back bare.
- Two Belly Straps: Hook-and-loop front and rear. On in a few seconds and off just as fast, with nothing over the head.
- Padded Bun: The bun halves are stuffed rather than flat panels, so it reads as a hot dog from the side.
- Legs Stay Free: Nothing goes round a leg, so a dog that hates being handled has far less to object.
- Belly Stays Open: Two narrow straps underneath, so the dog can still toilet with it on.
- Three Sizes: Chest 15.4 to 19.7 in, back length 9.8 to 13.8 in.
Perfect for the dachshund whose owner has heard the joke a thousand times
Some jokes are worth committing to. The reason this one works better than a full costume is that the dog keeps walking normally, legs free, belly open, head clear, so the hot dog moves the way a hot dog absolutely should not, and that is the whole pleasure of it.
Two straps. One very good photograph.

Questions

How do I choose a size?
Measure both the chest and the back on a long dog. S fits a 15.4 in chest with a 9.8 in back, M a 17.7 in chest with an 11.8 in back, and L a 19.7 in chest with a 13.8 in back. Allow 0.4 to 0.8 in of variation and take the larger size between two.
How does it stay on?
Two tan straps hang from the bun halves and fasten under the belly with hook-and-loop, one at the front and one at the rear. There is nothing over the head and nothing around the legs.
Will it fit a dog that is not a dachshund?
Yes. It is cut for a long back, so it sits best on a dachshund or a corgi, but it fits any small dog whose chest is in range. On a short-backed dog the bun simply covers proportionally more of the body.
Can my dog toilet with it on?
Yes. The belly is completely open and it only straps across the back, so nothing is in the way and all four legs are free. It goes on and off in seconds if you would rather take it off anyway.
Is it warm enough to wear outside?
The padded bun halves take the chill off and it is perfectly comfortable for a walk round the block on a mild day. On a properly cold one, wear it over a coat, the belly and sides stay open, so there is room underneath.
How should I wash it?
We would suggest sponging it clean and letting it air dry. It is stuffed, so a machine wash pushes the padding out of shape and it takes a long time to dry through.
Why this rather than a generic costume?
Because it is cut for a long back. Padded bun halves shaped for dachshunds and similar breeds, strapped over the top with the belly left open, so all four legs stay completely free.
