How do I choose a size?
Two sizes: M fits a chest of 21.7 to 31.5 in, L fits 26.4 to 39.4 in. M suits a labrador, a border collie or a springer; L suits a german shepherd, a malinois, a rottweiler or a malamute. Measure right round the ribcage behind the front legs, and put the figure in your order notes if you are between the two.
What fits in the pouches?
A collapsible bowl, a folded water bottle, treats, poop bag rolls, keys, a spare slip lead, a phone. Each flank pouch zips or flaps shut, and because they sit low on the ribs the weight rides over the dog’s centre of balance rather than swinging at the hips.
How much should my dog carry?
Start light and build up. A fit adult dog in good condition manages a modest load comfortably once conditioned to it, but a young dog whose growth plates have not closed, or an older dog, should carry little or nothing. Balance the two sides evenly, and take the pouches off for a puppy.
What are the two handles for?
Different jobs. The rear handle over the shoulders brings the dog to your leg for close control at a crossing or a vet door. The front handle helps you steady or assist a big dog over a stile, into a car boot or up a steep step, which is a genuine problem with an ageing large breed.
Will it hold a dog that pulls?
The buckles are metal rather than plastic, the load spreads across a full-width chest panel and both shoulder straps at once, and there is a steel ring at the rear. Get it snug with two fingers under the girth and it stays where you put it.
How does it go on?
Over the head once, then the two side buckles at the ribs. Four adjustment points let you set the neck and girth separately, which is what makes it sit properly on a deep-chested dog rather than riding forward.
How is it different from a plain tactical harness?
The pouches. A plain tactical vest gives you webbing rows and expects you to buy pouches separately and thread them on. These are sewn in, sit flat against the ribs, and cannot work loose halfway up a hill. If you want the harness without the load, the plain version is the better buy.
