The 3am Dry Throat

Central heating does this. You wake around three with your mouth like paper and your lips gone tight, and by morning your skin feels drawn and the door handle gives you a static shock. The Mistara puts the moisture back, a 1.3 litre ultrasonic humidifier for a bedside table or a desk, running over 12 hours on one fill at 280 ml an hour through two nozzles.

It fills from the top, so there is no lifting a sloshing tank out and no puddle on the nightstand. You just pour. It runs at under 36 dB, quiet enough to disappear once you stop noticing it, and two 360ยฐ nozzles give three modes, both running, both pulsing, or alternating, with a soft night light in the base.

Mistara Ultrasonic Room Humidifier, how to unpack and set it up

  • Fills From The Top: Pour straight in: no lifting the tank out, no carrying it upside down, no puddle on the nightstand.
  • Over 12 Hours A Fill: 1.3 litres at 280 ml an hour, so you fill it before bed and it is still going in the morning.
  • Under 36 dB: Quieter than a whisper, so it fades into the background instead of keeping you awake.
  • Two 360 Degree Nozzles: Three modes, both on, both pulsing or alternating, so you can aim the mist away from a wall.
  • Soft Night Light: A warm glow from the base, enough to find a glass of water.
  • Easy To Clean: Vinegar, water and a brush. There is no filter to buy.

Perfect for the bedroom that dries out every winter

The moment the heating goes on in October, the air in a closed bedroom loses most of its moisture, and you feel it first thing in the morning, throat, lips, skin, static. A humidifier on the nightstand is the direct fix, and the reason people stop using the ones they own is almost always the same: refilling was a nuisance. This one pours in from the top and runs the whole night, so it stays in use past November.

Fill it before bed. Forget about it.

Your Questions, Answered

Mistara Ultrasonic Room Humidifier, close-up of the main features

How long does one fill last?

Over 12 hours. The tank holds 1.3 litres and it puts out about 280 ml an hour, so filling it at bedtime covers the night and usually most of the next day at a lower setting.

Is it quiet enough for a bedroom?

Yes. It runs under 36 dB, which is around the level of a quiet library or a whisper. There is no fan noise, because ultrasonic misting uses a vibrating plate rather than a blower.

How do I set it up?

One minute, once. Lift out the cotton wick, soak it in water for five minutes so it draws properly, drop it back in, fill, switch on. From then on it mists the moment you press the button, and you never have to do it again.

Can I put essential oils in it?

It is sold as an aroma diffuser as well, so a few drops in the tank is the intended use. Oils leave residue over time, so if you use them, clean the tank more often than you otherwise would.

How do I clean it?

Open the top, use a mix of white vinegar and water, work a small brush into the corners and around the nozzles, then rinse thoroughly and let it air dry. There is no filter or cartridge to replace, so cleaning is the whole of the maintenance.

What does it do to the air?

It puts moisture back into it. Dry indoor air is what leaves you with a scratchy throat, a blocked nose and static off the door handle every winter, and a 1.3 litre tank pushes cool mist back into the room for over twelve hours a fill. Add a drop of oil and the same mist carries the scent with it.

What is in the box?

The humidifier, a USB cable and a manual. There is no wall adapter, so you plug it into a USB port or your own USB plug.
