I have a cat. Can I use essential oils in it?
Please check with your vet first. Many common essential oils are toxic to cats, tea tree, eucalyptus, citrus, peppermint, pine and ylang ylang among them, and cats cannot metabolise them the way people do. Birds are more sensitive again. Plain water is completely fine in this unit and is what we would use in a home with a cat or a bird. If you do diffuse anything, do it in a ventilated room the animal can walk out of.
What does it do to the air?
It puts moisture back into it. Dry indoor air is what leaves you with a scratchy throat, a blocked nose and a static shock off the door handle every winter, and this pushes a cool ultrasonic mist back into the room all evening. Add a drop of oil and the same mist carries the scent with it.
How long does a tank last?
A 300 ml tank and a 30 ml per hour output, which works out at roughly ten hours. That is arithmetic from their two figures rather than a tested runtime, and it will vary with the setting and the room.
Is it quiet enough for a bedroom?
Yes, 36 to 45 dB. That is a soft hiss and a faint bubble, the sort of sound that disappears within a minute of lying down. Plenty of people run it all night.
What water should I use?
Filtered or distilled water if your area is hard. Tap water works but mineral scale builds on the plate faster and shortens the time between cleanings.
How do I clean it?
Empty it after use rather than leaving standing water in it, and wipe the plate with a soft cloth every week or so. Standing water in any humidifier is the thing that makes it smell.
Why this rather than a plain humidifier?
