Open ground: parks, fields, beaches and forest trails, anywhere a dog earns a bit of range without you letting go. Thumb the brake and it stops dead; thumb the lock and it stays there, so you can shorten it to heel length crossing a car park and let it back out on the other side.
How do I get the most out of it?
Keep your hand on the handle and let the thumb do the work: brake to slow, lock to hold, release to let out. Because the tape is flat woven nylon rather than a round cord, it reels back smoothly and lies flat on the ground instead of tangling round a leg.
What size dog is it for?
It is built for small and medium dogs walking calmly. Treat it as a lead for small and medium dogs walking calmly. A dog that lunges hard needs a fixed lead and a proper harness, not this.
Which length should I choose?
9.8 ft if you walk anywhere with other people, dogs or bicycles. 16.4 ft only for genuinely open ground. Longer is not better: it is more tape to manage and more distance to close if something happens.
Does the lock hold reliably?
The slider holds the tape at the length you set. As with any mechanism, check it before you rely on it and stop using the lead if the brake or lock starts to feel vague. That is true of every retractable lead on the market.
Can I clip it to a collar?
We would clip it to a harness. Any lead that can reach the end of its travel puts a sudden stop somewhere, and on a collar that is the neck.
